The attack was carried out by fighters linked to the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram.

According to reports, the incident happened at a Joint Task Force formation in Benesheikh, located in Kaga local government area. The town sits along the busy Damaturu Road, a known route often targeted by insurgents.

Sources within the military said the attackers stormed the base with explosives and sustained gunfire. The assault reportedly lasted for hours, creating panic within the camp and surrounding areas. Casualties were said to be high, although the exact number of those killed is yet to be officially confirmed.

Among those killed was Brigadier-General O. O. Braimah, who was said to be the commander of the 29 Brigade in the area. His killing has dealt a heavy blow to the military formation operating in that axis. Several other officers and soldiers were also feared dead during the attack. In addition to those killed, many soldiers sustained serious injuries. Some personnel are still unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue.

Military authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The latest attack adds to growing concerns over renewed insurgent activities in the North-East. In recent weeks, Boko Haram and its ISWAP faction have intensified operations, targeting military positions and security formations across Borno State.
